Problem
LIP LAB needed an easier way to onboard intermittent new hires who could be new to color theory, customer experience building, and the mechanics of crafting a custom lipstick. Previously, this on boarding could only be conducted by an in-person facilitator; a costly investment of bandwidth and time.
Solution
This training course handles all of the info a new hire needs without sacrificing valuable in-person hands-on training. Learners are able to take this course in three parts or in a whole session, in between visiting the workshop with supplied guided practice intervals.
DEFINE THE GOAL
Distilling the Content
To begin, this project relied upon leveraging existing materials to inform the creation of something new.
I conducted interviews with facilitators of the onboarding training team and scoured our archives for any supporting imagery or video. I coded the resources to create a comprehensive index of what was available and hierarchically organized the content. I then crafted a storyboard to present to stakeholders.
DEVELOP THE EXPERIENCE
Built then Iterated
Stakeholders were eager to see a functional prototype, so using a rough outline, I built out a functional prototype right away that underwent several rounds of feedback and then was shared with MATC, an external agency to support in the build and ideation. I stayed close in partnership to support the realization of the project vision.
The prototype evolved driven by feedback with consideration to shortening the copy, adjusting formatting for premium accessibility, and creating customized storyline blocks to capture nuanced content. The final product then underwent several rounds of QA and approvals.
RESULTS + TAKEAWAYS

IMPACT
Everything Everywhere All at Once
While the impact is projected at the current time, it’s clear the impact this project will have when launched.
In-Person Training
Time + Money: Between paying store leaders for a three day on demand training and loosing the sales potential, this module has the power to save the brand $250,000 in onboarding costs.
Retention + Effectiveness: Retention rates can vary, and trainer effectiveness also varies. A current frustration that store leaders have is that new hires are often not vetted with the most thorough induction and time is wasted reteaching.
E-Learning
Time + Money: the one time cost for the creation and dissemination of this course between paying myself and an agency averaged about $20,000
Retention + Effectiveness: With the included comprehensive array of vetted quizzes, interactive module elements and simulations, learners can be assessed and can revisit learning objectives upon demand.
